Hair Standing Up? It’s Time to Run Inside – Lightning Safety Explained!

The last week of June is National Lightning Awareness Week and I wanted to share a story about my close call with lightning!

Lightning is no joke. I’ll never forget the day I picked up my oldest son from kindergarten. Just as I pulled into the parking lot, lightning struck the ground just five feet from my car. The hair on my arms stood straight up right before the strike—an eerie warning. A blinding white-blue flash lit up everything, and a strange, electric feeling surged through me. Mom & son Thankfully, I was in my vehicle, which kept me safe. That’s because cars with metal roofs act like Faraday cages—the electric charge travels around you and into the ground. If I had been standing outside, the result could have been very different. However, I still felt the jolt and some electrical jolt did hit me. But the safety of being inside my car was a lifesaver! My son is now grown with a kindergardener of his own.

Just like cars protect you from lightning by redirecting electrical energy around you, ESD Static Shielding Bags work the same way for your sensitive electronics. At PackFreshUSA, our metal-in shielding bags are designed to act like miniature Faraday cages—keeping static discharges away from your devices and components. If a static charge can make your hair stand up, imagine what it can do to a circuit board! Whether you’re storing semiconductors, PCBs, or sensors, our ESD bags provide safe, grounded storage—because sparks belong in the sky, not your workspace. Did you know PackFreshUSA offers these bags? So, even if you see lightning in the distance if you can hear the thunder act immediately, do not collect 200 bucks. Get inside! Hear thunder, move immediately! Lightning can strike outside the storm. Best be wise and get inside.

Lightning Safety Tips:

  • Stay in your car if you are caught outside in a storm.
  • If outside immediately seek shelter in a building.
  • If no building is near, find a ditch and get as low to the ground.
  • Don’t stand under trees or near tall poles.
  • Indoors? Avoid windows, don’t wash dishes, and never use corded phones or other electrical items—lightning can travel through plumbing and phone and electric lines.
  • Do not stand on front porches or steps, be within an enclosed structure. No pergola or porches are safe.

Animal Safety - get your animals in the house or barn.

Remember:
“When thunder roars, go indoors.”
If your hair stands up or you feel tingling on your skin, take shelter immediately—a lightning strike is imminent.

Making sure you stay safe and be prepared!
