Creating your own MREs (Meals Ready to Eat)

Creating your own Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) is simple and more affordable than buying your regular bland-MRE's at your local military surplus or survival store. Creating your own MRE's gives you the opportunity to personalize each meal to your liking and most importantly gives you the peace of mind that you are prepared for an emergency. When packaged in Mylar bags with our oxygen absorbers, DIY MRE's have a shelf life of well over 25+ years!

There are a ton of shelf stable recipes you may incorporate into an MRE, here are a few great ideas.

  • Instant Tomato Soup: You can use powdered tomato to make a soup base. Optional ingredients like bell pepper, spices, and powdered milk can be added to the mix.
  • Beef Stroganoff: Beef stroganoff is an excellent meal. Boil water along with a handful of egg noodles, then add beef jerky pieces, dehydrated yogurt or buttermilk powder, and dehydrated garlic and onion powder.
  • Vegetable Rice: Instant rice makes this delicious side dish incredibly easy. Dried fresh peas, green bean pieces, cooked carrot slices, and just about anything else can be added to instant boiling hot instant rice that’s been made slightly wet.
  • Beef Stew: Slices of cooked and dried carrot and potato along with beef jerky, onion and garlic powder, spices, and a beef bouillon make for a great meal! You may customize this by adding dried peas, bell peppers or tomatoes.

Other Items to Include in Your MREs

  • Plastic utensils
  • Napkins
  • Water packets
  • Salt & Pepper packets
  • Sugar packets
  • Other Spices and seasonings
  • Cooking recipes

Your DIY MRE can be stored in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Our 2-quart Mylar gusset bags are an ideal storage container, as they can hold enough for a decent meal and you can add water directly into the pouch to rehydrate your meal (don’t forget to remove the oxygen absorber first!). We do suggest placing the bag in a study container to hold it up when pouring boiling water.

You can then store your MRE packages in a larger 5 gallon Mylar bags and inside a food-grade 5 gallon bucket for extra protection.
