Vacuum Sealing for Freshness: Fruits, Veggies & Cheese Done Right
There’s nothing better than enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables straight from your garden—or picking up in-season produce from your local farmers market or store. They always taste their best when they’re fresh, ripe, and local. Peaches Vacuumed Sealed, 2 years ago
I recently picked up some cherries for a recipe, and they were so delicious, I had to go back for more. Cherries are my favorite fruit, and since they’re in season, I’m stocking up and freezing them for later.
But here’s the deal: not all vacuum sealing bags are created equal. I’ve learned the hard way that freezer bags with zip tops just don’t cut it. They let air leak in over time, and that shortens your storage life. That’s why I use PackFreshUSA Vacuum Sealer Bags made in USA—they’re not only thicker than most vacuum seal bags, come in a variety of sizes, but they’re also made for serious long-term storage.
Cheese, Please: Vacuum-Sealing Bulk Cheese
Buying in bulk is a smart move, especially for cheese lovers. I picked up two of those giant Costco packs of sliced cheese—each brick had three sections. Here’s how I stored them:
- Parchment Paper: I cut parchment sheets to layer between the slices so they wouldn’t stick together.
- Prep & Pack: Each section fits perfectly in a Quart Vacuum Sealer Bag.
- Oxygen Absorbers: I added a 100cc oxygen absorber to each bag for extended freshness and zero oxygen exposure.
- Double Seal: Always double heat-seal the top to ensure a secure closure.
- Labeling: Use a Sharpie to label each bag with the type and date.
- Freeze: Into the freezer they go—now I’ve got cheese stored for months (or longer!). OR refigerate.
Using oxygen absorbers is my not-so-secret weapon. If you haven’t seen my video on why I swear by them, click here to check it out. I vacuum-sealed ground beef three years ago—and when I opened it? Still looked amazing!
